Visitor Centre
Our Visitor Centre is based at Kingswear Railway Station. It is a Visitor Centre with a difference – a converted railway carriage and is free to enter!
Here at the Dartmouth Steam Railway, we are very proud of our past when Britain was famous for being at the forefront of engineering excellence. The Paignton to Kingswear line lays testament to these Victorian achievements, with three fantastic viaducts designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The visitor centre holds a special exhibition dedicated to his life and work.
It is a great educational tool for school groups, the children can learn so much from how a steam engine works, the history of Dartmouth to the variety of wildlife that can be seen on the River Dart. The visitor centre also boasts a 40 foot, 200 year timeline and is open on operational days from 10am – 5pm.
The visitor centre was officially opened on Friday 19th September 2008 by Rowena Houghton, daughter of the late Bob Saunders. Bob Saunders was the founder director of the Dart Valley Railway and was paramount in preserving the heritage line that we know today.
