Find out More

Traditional family holiday destination Paignton was a small fishing village until the 19th century, when in 1837 the Paington Harbour Act saw the construction of a new harbour and the modern spelling, Paignton, first appeared. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of AD 1086. Formerly spelt Peynton and Paington, the name derives from Paega's town which was the original Anglo-Saxon settlement. The town has had a market and fair since 1294. Paignton is rightly famous for the wonderful soft and sandy beaches (with all important child friendly waters) and offers a bright and...

Kingswear sits on the east bank of the River Dart opposite Dartmouth. The brightly painted houses (the village is often likened to Balamory), church pubs and other buildings rise up steeply from the river. There are little winding streets, friendly pubs and some truly spectacular views - especially from the top of the village which overlooks the sea in one direction and up river to Tones in the other direction. Kingswear is a very good starting point for walking along the coast or discovering the Dart Valley Trail.   Getting to Kingswear Postcode for SatNav: TQ6 0AA Get...

Truly a town for all seasons Dartmouth is a fascinating maritime town in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a rich maritime and sailing history - and has been a popular tourist destination for decades. It is bordered by picturesque villages, beautiful unspoilt beaches, all weather local attractions and truly stunning landscape. The town is also very close to the Dartmoor National Park. Dartmouth harbour has always been of strategic importance as a deep-water port for navy vessels. It was the home of the Royal Navy in the reign of Edward III. - ships have been...

Torquay - the quintessential seaside experience! The swaying palm trees, busy harbour and international marina often reminds you of the Mediterranean. The pier, promenade and marina area are well worth an afternoon of wandering with stops for the odd ice cream, coffee, lunch or dinner. You will also find a walk up the steps of Royal Terrace Gardens to delight in the amazing sea views across the bay to be well worth the effort (admittedly, not that much effort!). The view is also truly glorious at night with the lights reflecting onto the sea and looking across the Bay to the lights of...

Brixham - pirate and fishing town! Brixham’s history is filled with tales of pirates and smugglers (with an annual Pirate Festival being highly popular with adults and kids alike dressing up and partaking in lots of “ooh arr me pirates”, etc!). Seek out the Old Fish Market for something a bit out of the ordinary (the brand new hi-tech fish market opened recently but the old market is still open in the spring and summer months). There is a thriving fishing industry in Brixham so where else should you try the fresh catch of the day than at one of the town’s many...

When the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway opened on 14 March 1861 it passed over a level crossing on Tanners Lane, which led to the sea at Goodrington. Building the line across the marsh at Goodrington proved difficult but was achieved by laying redundant pipes from the failed atmospheric railway between Exeter and Newton in the ground for drainage.  It was not until 9 July 1928 that a small station, initially known as just "Goodrington", was opened on the Kingswear side of the level crossing. A second platform was added as the double line, which had reached Tanners Lane in 1928, was...

Churston station was the location for the opening scene in "The System", a 1964 film. Several of the main characters arrive at the last minute and jump onto a Diesel Multiple Unit that is just pulling out towards Kingswear. After the opening credits, they then get off a different train at Brixham. Agatha Christie lived nearby at Greenway and set some stories in and around the area - Churston is the 'C' in the The A.B.C. Murders! The Dartmouth and Torbay Railway from Paignton railway station to Churston was opened for passengers on 14 March 1861 and for goods traffic on 1 April 1861. The...
