Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta - 175th year
29th, 30th & 31st August 2019
The first recorded competitive regatta was held on the river Dart at Dartmouth in 1822. Other informal regattas were held in some of the following years leading to the establishment of Dartmouth Regatta in 1834. The regatta later became known as the Port of Dartmouth Regatta and in 1856 the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta.
Thousands of visitors from the region and beyond descend on Dartmouth every August for a packed three-day programme of air displays, sailing, sports, live music, street food, fireworks and more. Nearly 100,000 people visit Dartmouth during the Regatta period, swelling the town’s population of approximately 6,000 and making Dartmouth Regatta one of the largest public events in the South West - and the second largest Regatta after Cowes Week.
The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, labelled the ‘Best in the West’, always delivers superb sporting competition by way of sailing and rowing competitions (including the WEARA Championships), road race, swimming gala and golf, tennis, bowls and darts tournaments. There is also brilliant entertainment with barrel rolling, water polo and trolley grand prix competitions and other eccentric English events! The waterbourne tug of war in particular is not to be missed! Then there is the live music including a Proms style extravaganza!
Regatta fireworks displays take place at 9pm on Saturday evening. The fireworks are launched from a barge on the river making for a spectacular display over the River Dart estuary.
