Marine Operational Roles

Ships Engineer

The beautiful and historic Paddle Steamer Kingswear Castle II celebrated her Centenary in 2024. Following this important milestone we have a very exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join the vessel as the “Ships Engineer”.

This is a truly unique opportunity to become one of only a handful of people fortunate enough to be able to describe themselves an Engineer aboard a working, coal fired, paddle steamer passenger vessel.

The successful candidate will eventually become responsible for the scheduled maintenance of all the ships’ systems and, on a day-to-day basis, will be required to carry out routine maintenance and inspections, raising and maintaining steam and subsequently controlling the engine throughout the working day of her scheduled services.

The position would suit a hardworking, self-motivated individual who would be keen to fully immerse themselves in the whole experience of working on this very special ship. A keen interest in mechanical engineering and an understanding of steam propelled machinery would be advantageous.

Full training and a competitive remuneration package will be offered.

If this opportunity is of interest to you then please apply via email at paulmerrington@dsrrb.co.uk in order to be forwarded the relevant job application pack.

Railway Operational Roles

Infrastructure Administrator

The Dart Valley Railway Company operates the Dartmouth Steam Railway in South Devon, which runs between Paignton and Kingswear and is currently seeking to appoint an Infrastructure Administrator. The Administrator is a key role within the Permanent Way department who maintains the physical safety of the railway and carries out the day-to-day maintenance of the railway's infrastructure.

Prospective applicants must be able to demonstrate experience of planning and scheduling activities for groups of people or events. The applicant will have a practical approach to organising, resourcing and record keeping. It is essential the applicant is computer literate and able to use Office Word, Excel and Outlook effectively. Spreadsheet editing, formulas or database skills are desirable.

Communication and people skills are also key to this role: the administrator will be coordinating the teams who work on the track and arranging access for consultants and contractors who will need to access the line for maintenance and inspection. There will be close links with other operational staff who manage the railway to ensure work is scheduled efficiently, working around train services.

Practical experience of working on a Railway, with Permanent Way or civil engineering, is desirable but not essential - training will be provided where basic technical skills are required, such as taking charge of the line to enable engineering work and carrying out basic visual inspections. A driving license is essential.

We offer a competitive remuneration package.

If this opportunity is of interest to you then please apply via email at paulmerrington@dsrrb.co.uk in order to be forwarded the relevant job application pack.

S&T Technician

The Dartmouth Steam Railway is looking for a paid S&T technician on a part time paid basis (actual working hours to be agreed) to undertake maintenance of the signalling equipment on the Railway.  There may be an opportunity that this could be a full-time post if the candidate is willing to work in other departments.

Ideally applicants should be competent to work on HW and WBS63 point machines as well as traditional mechanically operated points; MVDC track circuits and Silec treadles; Goodwin and Warren Manually controlled barrier equipment; multiple aspect colour light signals, AWS and TPWS; and signalling power supplies up to 110vAC / 120vDC.  There is no requirement to be an IRSE license holder although this would an advantage.

Applicants who are interested in the role or wish further information should apply to Paul Merrington at PaulMerrington@dsrrb.co.uk.

Reviews

  • Nostalgic day out - Had a great day on the steam railway and paddleboat with my family. Fantastic views during the railway trip and equally excellent views, and commentary, during the river cruise. Well worth the cost, friendly and helpful staff.
  • At last! - Went by steam train and ferry to Dartmouth on the last day of our holiday. Beautiful. Lovely journey on the steam train and the ferry was also a very pleasant trip. Spent a couple of hours in Dartmouth before repeating the journey. So glad I have managed to do it at last!
  • Brilliant - Brilliant day out. We booked the train and cruise and had a great time. What's not to like; steam train, ferry river crossing and river cruise. Then all in reverse. Great day out!
