Round Robin
Book Now
Our best seller, this famous and award winning tour is the best way to explore South Devon! Includes steam train, river boat and bus visiting the quaint towns of Paignton, Dartmouth and Totnes.
Journey times are: steam train (c.30 minutes), a river boat (c.90 minutes) and a bus (c.30 minutes). Sit back and enjoy the scenery and we will take care of the rest. This award-winning ticket is a favourite with both young and old. Commentary provided (boat trip only).
The Round Robin runs from 1st April to 30th September in 2021.
To make your life easier, we have created an itinerary planner. Go to the “Book” page where you can view suggested itineraries for all dates. Note: the Round Robin changes daily due to the tides on the River Dart at Totnes.
If you wish to make your own itinerary there is also a facility to do so on the same “Book” page.
Finally, you can download our full leaflet and employ the following steps:
1 - Choose your departure point (Paignton, Dartmouth, Kingswear, Totnes or Torquay).
2 - Check the sailing times between Dartmouth - Totnes (and vice versa)
3 - Work out your preferred connecting train (allow 30 minutes to cross from Kingswear - Dartmouth and vice versa)
4 - If this doesn't work for you try taking the route the other way round
5 - Check out the bus timetable to complete your planning!
Sadly we cannot guarantee an open top bus will be running, even in good weather - it depends on servicing periods of our buses. The weather does play a factor in our decision as well. If you are particularly looking forward to this part of the journey, it is advisable to ring us on 01803 555872 on the morning of travel to confirm.
Access for limited mobility passengers at Totnes: There are certain high tides at Totnes which reduce to a minimum the number of steps that need to be navigated. This timetable is marked up and shown in blue with these tides to assist in choosing your trip.

Traditional family holiday destination
Paignton was a small fishing village until the 19th century, when in 1837 the Paington Harbour Act saw the construction of a new harbour and the modern spelling, Paignton, first appeared. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of AD 1086. Formerly spelt Peynton and Paington, the name derives from Paega's town which was the original Anglo-Saxon settlement. The town has had a market and fair since 1294.

Kingswear sits on the east bank of the River Dart opposite Dartmouth. The brightly painted houses (the village is often likened to Balamory), church pubs and other buildings rise up steeply from the river. There are little winding streets, friendly pubs and some truly spectacular views - especially from the top of the village which overlooks the sea in one direction and up river to Tones in the other direction. Kingswear is a very good starting point for walking along the coast or discovering the Dart Valley Trail.

The swaying palm trees, busy harbour and international marina often reminds you of the Mediterranean. The pier, promenade and marina area are well worth an afternoon of wandering with stops for the odd ice cream, coffee, lunch or dinner. You will also find a walk up the steps of Royal Terrace Gardens to delight in the amazing sea views across the bay to be well worth the effort (admittedly, not that much effort!). When the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway opened on 14 March 1861 it passed over a level crossing on Tanners Lane, which led to the sea at Goodrington. Building the line across the marsh at Goodrington proved difficult but was achieved by laying redundant pipes from the failed atmospheric railway between Exeter and Newton in the ground for drainage.
It was not until 9 July 1928 that a small station, initially known as just "Goodrington", was opened on the Kingswear side of the level crossing. A second platform was added as the double line, which had reached Tanners Lane in 1928, was...
